Halloween
A few days ago, I read a very interesting article on the online website
“readworks.org” that talks
about HALLOWEEN.
I thought
you might be interested because for some people Halloween is something very special. When the time approaches
Halloween, you hear a lot of it on the radio and in the news on TV. Also many people don‘t even know how Halloween
orginated and where it really comes from. Maybe there are some important information
for you that you want to know.
Basically
it says that Halloween is the border between fall and winter, plenty and
paucity, life and death, it's a time of celebration and superstition. It‘s
thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when
people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. But
in present, Halloween has a completely different meaning. It‘s much more
something for the little ones. Going from house to house in costume and ask for
trick-or-treating makes everyone much fun.
The author
mentions the very special transformation and development of the former
Halloween till today. In the past, people were afraid of this. Nowadays people
are looking forward to Halloween.
It also said
that earlier, when people left the house that day, spirits flew around. So also
the humanity disguised itself to remain unrecognized. They put bowls of food in
front of the door so they wouldn‘t enter their house.
I was very scared of where
Halloween actually comes from and what happened earlier. That we celebrate it
nowadays as if it were just for fun makes me very questionable.
Personally, I don’t like
Halloween because the story of this day scares me a little bit. Also, I've
never been disguised door to door and asked for trick or treating. My parents
have always been against it and now I have no interest in it. I prefer to spend
the evening together with my friends and watch a movie. That's the way I like
to spend this day.
